It is very easy to get married in Virginia.
Here are a few guidelines to help you get started.
- You will need to obtain a marriage license before your wedding. You can get the marriage license from any Circuit Courthouse in the state - it DOES NOT have to come from the same city or county that your wedding will take place. The courts are generally open from 9 am - 4:30 pm Mon-Fri. They are closed on Saturdays, Sundays and all state holidays.
- You will have to go in person and the Circuit Court Clerk will need to see a photo ID for each of you. No other documentation is required.
- It is not necessary to be a Virginia resident or a US Citizen to get a marriage license in Virginia.
- No blood tests are required.
- The cost of a marriage license is $30 payable to the Circuit Court of Virginia.
- There is no waiting. You can get married immediately after you get the marriage license; but you do have to "use" your marriage license (get married) within 60 days or the license will expire.
- After your wedding ceremony, your officiant, wedding minister or Justice of the Peace will fill out and sign the marriage license. The officiant will return it to the same courthouse you got it from. If you want a "certified" copy of the completed license to use for legal purposes, you get it from the courthouse after the officiant returns it to them. The courts charge approximately $3 per certified copy. Some courts let you pre-pay for this when you get the license, but not all do. Ask the court about it when you get the license.
